Government troops are launching another offensive against the Liberation Tigers in northern Sri Lanka in an attempt to cut off access to outside help. The government army claims that the rebels have lost a far greater amount of troops, while the rebels make an opposite claim.

A Jan 1995, cease fire in the civil war between the Sri Lankan army and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is still in effect, but shaky. Peace negotiations have stalled over control of the Poonareen military base and land access to the Jaffna peninsula.
