The 11th man: Portuguese escudo

Article Abstract:

Portugal has joined the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM) during difficult economic times. Portuguese manufacturers believe that the escudo has been overvalued. The government hopes that joining the ERM will lower inflation, but it may actually rise sharply.

Labor unions and other constituencies are feuding over Portugal's proposed 1993 budget, which will involve cuts in public spending. The budget is intended to conform Portugal's economy with richer European countries by reducing the deficit and consumer prices.

The Portuguese banking industry has grown rapidly since deregulation through automation and with the help of a growing economy. There is concern though that it is unwisely pursuing aggressive lending policies even though economic growth may be slowing.
