The battle for Kabul: Afghanistan

Civil war rages on in Afghanistan despite the fall of the communist government a year ago. The latest battles in Kabul, Afghanistan left 600 dead. Rival leaders fighting for control of the capital include Abdul Rashid Dostam and Gulbuddin Hikmatyar, the prime minister-designate.

Civil conflicts have escalated in Afghanistan since Soviet troops withdrew. In 1992, about 30,000 were killed in the city of Kabul, which is controlled mostly by Ahmad Shah Masoud. Herat has been devastated by shelling and bombing.
