The good tax guide: with a new tax year looming, investors should be making the most of opportunities for tax relief. But not all the special offers and concessions are valuable
Article Abstract:
There are many investments that are tax free covering deposits to venture capital, although research by Mintel for Independent Financial Advice Promotion (IFAP) found that investors are missing out on tax saving investment opportunities. National Savings certificates currently offer a tax-free return of 5.85% guaranteed for five years, and Tax-Exempt Special Savings Accounts (TESSA) still provide a tax shelter for income. Any dividends or gains from personal equity plans (PEPs) are tax free, and investors who place capital gains tax (CGT) liable profits directly into unquoted trading companies can get CGT rollover relief.

Money talks: rocked by criticisms of malpractice, 1994 was not a good year for financial advisers. So how do you pick the best one? And how do you know whether they are giving you the best advice?
Article Abstract:
Deregulation in the financial market place has meant that more companies are offering a total financial planning service, making it more difficult to to choose a good financial adviser. Banks and building socieites are mostly agents for their own policies and investments, although they can provide consultants to advise on pensions, investment bodns and other insurance policies. New regulations will mean financial advisers must disclose to customers how much will be spent on comission and other expenses when purchasing a pension or savings plan.

Look before you leap
Article Abstract:
Thorough independent research into possible new markets especially those in developing areas will greatly assist companies wishing to make investments into these countries. Many companies have failed in the past from either being negligent in their understanding of local issues, work practices or bureaucracy. Large multinationals have not been exempt from failure often caused by being too remote from the culture and legal restrictions in a country.
