The monkey and the gorilla
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has increased its market share of chips for cheaper computers, and is encroaching on the more lucrative part of the market. The company was involved in a long legal battle with Intel which was distracting and affected investor confidence. The company also had problems with its K5 chip, but was helped by the aquisition of NexGen, with a design for a new processor, and a gifted team of engineers. The K6 processor has been successful and output has increased in 1998. Consumers are unconcerned whether their computer has an Intel chip or not, despite efforts to establish the Intel brand.

Squeeze, gently: Intel and microchips
Article Abstract:
Intel holds over a 90% share of the microprocessor market due to the success of its Pentium microchip. It's hold on the hardware market is similar to Microsoft's hold on the software market and between them, the two companies control the personal computer market. Intel has not invoked the rancor that Microsoft has.
