Very old and high-quality carpets may retain their value, while less valuable items are more likely to be affected by fashion. Collectors should buy carpets that they like rather than trying to make a profit.

A cut in the capital gains tax may not raise saving and investment in the US as politicians expect. A tax cut may increase both investment and consumption, which risks higher inflation unless the level of private saving is raised.
