Lebanese Muslims and Christians mourned together and buried more than 100 people killed by Israeli artillery on April 18, 1996. US secretary of state Warren Christopher served as peace messenger between Lebanon's Hizbullah's guerrillas and the Israeli government.

Lebanon is holding elections for new parliamentary members, and election districts have been engineered to favor candidates supported by Syrians. Christian political parties may boycott the elections because of interference from Syria.
