The tigers' fearful symmetry
Article Abstract:
Political turmoil surrounds the Assn. of South East Asian Nations'Jul 1997 approval of the membership of authoritarian regimes Myanmar and Cambodia. The more democratic ASEAN nations are afraid that the new members will make the organization look like it supports dictatorships, such as that installed by Cambodia's Hun Sen in Jul 1997. Analysts in ASEAN member nations oppose the new additions, and many outsiders believe that ASEAN's traditional "hands-off" policy regarding politics may have to change if the organization is to be useful to all member nations.

Expanding ASEAN: a good idea eventually, but not now
Article Abstract:
ASEAN will be 30 years old in Jul 1997. It's recent decision to accept Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar as members is premature. Existing members of ASEAN are Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
