The torrent along the Yangzi

Article Abstract:

China faces serious flooding which threatens Wuhan, an industrial city. The Yangzi floods are the worst since 1954 and over 2,000 people have died. Infrastructure, real estate and crops have been damaged, and lesser rivers have also flooded in northern China. The government had hoped for economic growth of 8% in 1998 but growth had already dropped to 7% in early 1998 and the flood could cut growth by 0.4% according to official estimates and 1% according to western estimates. China aims to avoid devaluing, and a trade surplus was announced for Jul 1998.
