The unmeasurable lightness of being
Article Abstract:
Traditional measures of economic performance are becoming increasingly unreliable, even though governments have sought over recent years to improve the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of their statistics. The main factors causing traditional statistics to become unreliable are invisibility, technology and globalization. Statisticians now face considerable challenges as they seek to boost the quality of their own output. Technology is allowing people to greatly advance their knowledge, but is in fact reducing people's knowledge about economic performance.
