Article Abstract:

The tobacco industry in Eastern Europe has developed the image of being supportive of charities, even as it is perceived as a public health threat in the US and in many countries in Western Europe. Simultaneously, the tobacco industry was praised for supporting community ventures during the difficult move to a market economy. Companies offered jobs, investment, huge tax revenues, and additional contributions.
