Tourism and the over 45s

Article Abstract:

The holiday market for the over 45s is growing, with an estimated 41.3 million holidays expected to be taken by the group in 1999, against 37.6 million in 1995. Some 39% of the UK population is accounted for by the over 45s and the group takes 41% of its holidays overseas. There has been rapid growth in foreign travel, both in the short and long haul markets, although the short-haul sector attracts 84% of the market. Saga is the leading holiday operator for the over 45s, its turnover rising by 98% between 1994 and 1998. The over 45s holiday market is set to grow by 9% to 2003, reaching more than 45 million trips.

Holiday Property

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom holiday property market fell 22% in real terms in 1996 from 1991, although holiday property values were in recovery. United Kingdom consumers spent 10% less on holiday cottages and homes, partly because of a fall in the number of available properties. The global timeshare market is growing, despite the negative publicity in the UK. The anticipated growth of the market to the year 2000 is highly dependent on the over 44-year-olds. The market is examined in detail.
