Sumitomo Rubber Industries and Goodyear have set up an alliance which will strengthen the position of Goodyear which will rank first in the world market. Goodyear will take control of Sumitomo operations in France, Germany, Britain and America. Job cuts are likely as a result of the agreeement, as well as cost savings for Goodyear. Other deals could follow in Japan and elsewhere, though regulatory problems could prevent mergers in some markets.
