UK: THREAT AGAINST DANISH BACON EXPORTS

Article Abstract:

William Hague, the leader of the British Conservative Party, wishes to stop imports of meat from countries which don't live up to the British animal welfare legislation. He says British pig breeders are treated unfairly, as breeders in Denmark and the Netherlands don't have to comply with the same tough regulation. Director John Howard of the Danish Bacon and Meat Council in the UK is shocked over Mr. Hague's statements, and says Danish pork lives up to extremely high health and quality requirements.

DENMARK: NUMBER OF PIG BREEDERS TO FALL

Article Abstract:

In the long run, the number of pig breeding farms in Denmark will fall to about 5,000 from the present 18,000, according to Lindhart B Nielsen, chairman of the pig breeder association Landsudvalget for Svin. He says 3,500 farms are already by now in acute crisis. The reason behind this is low pork prices. In 1999, the average price is about DKr 7.30 (USD 1.03) per kilo.
