U.K. drug maker agrees to buy Transkaryotic

Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC of the United Kingdom is to acquire Transkaryotic Therapies Inc. of the United States for $1.6 billion. Chief Executive Officer of Transkaryotic Therapies Inc., Michael Astrue has resigned in apparent disagreement with the acquisition. Transkaryotic Therapies Inc., a biotechnology company, shares are up 16 percent to $35.21 on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange.

Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC of the United Kingdom is to acquire Transkaryotic Therapies Inc. of the United States for $1.6 billion. One third of Transkaryotic Therapies Inc.'s shareholders want their shares appraised, which could raise the price of the acquisition for Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC.
