Insurance firm Prudential Corp. of London has announced its intentions of purchasing a further 21% of Malaysian insurance company Berjaya Prudential Assurance Bh. for about 220.5 million ringgit or $50 million. The stock purchase will give the English firm a controlling stake of 51% in the Malaysian company. The deal was organized under new regulations which allow foreign firms to acquire a maximum of 51% of a local insurance company. The regulations are part of a deal between Prime Minister Mohamad's government and the World Trade Organization to liberalize the market.

Some investors still remain optimistic of gaming stocks, particularly lottery operators, as these companies will continue to post earnings even if taxes are raised. Repco's chaotic trading could upset other stocks on Malaysia's second board
