Westminster flies in the face of Gummer's Thames policy
Article Abstract:
Westminster City Council has applied to develop a large site near Chelsea Bridge to incorporate family and low cost housing, a new public area, and commercial properties such as restaurants and bars. However environment secretary John Gummer's Strategic Planning Guidance for the Thames, calls for planning authorities to safeguard wharves for uses such as freight shipment. The scheme has had strong support following consultations with the local community and the council believes that the site could not be maintained as a working wharf due to its existing residential area and limited commercial access.
