Israel wants Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat to decisively crack down on Palestinian terrorist groups following the Jul 30, 1997, bombing that killed 13 in Jerusalem. However, Arafat does not have the political leverage he had in early 1996 when the Oslo peace accord was progressing nicely.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is under growing international pressure to end the violence in Gaza and the West Bank. Arafat is also being criticised by his own people, but he is being given conflicting advice from the two main streams of Palestinians.

Israel's renewed 'war against terrorism' puts Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat under huge pressure and he may not survive as leader. Arafat has already lost much control, but any successor would probably be more radical towards Israel.
