General Instrument seen as well-positioned for digital age
Article Abstract:
Speculation existed that General Instrument, a maker of set top boxes, was to be bought out. This is due to the company's efforts to restructure itself to be more competitive. The company sees digital television offering more possibilities than current TV. As such, the company is coming out with a new set top box with expanded features, such as telephone, and a credit card slot for bill payment. To help reposition itself, GI signed agreements with Sony Electronics, and to acquire hardware and software technology to improve its services.
