Council ends its effort to counter ATM fees
Article Abstract:
The City Council of Philadelphia, PA, will no longer pursue the passage of an ordinance that would require banks to eliminate ATM charges to be able to do business in the city. Mayor Rendell had earlier vetoed the proposal following the banks' threat that they would turn away the city's business should the ordinance be approved. Rendell said that there were no regional banks with free ATM service that could handle the volume of business of the city. Pat McNamara, leader of the Consumers Education and Protective Association, expressed the local watchdog group's disappointment over the Council's inaction.
