Merger breakup put off for 20 days
Article Abstract:
DQE Inc. is still obligated to honor the terms of its $4.3-billion merger deal with Allegheny Energy Inc. DQE earlier informed Allegheny Energy that it considered the merger terminated and that it was no longer obligated to abide by its terms. However, Allegheny Energy, in its attempt to save the merger, filed a lawsuit to force DQE to continue honoring the merger agreement. Under the court order recently issued by US District Judge Robert J. Cindrich, DQE is not allowed to take any actions that might go against its merger agreement with Allegheny.

Allegheny wants to slow timetable
Article Abstract:
Allegheny Power Systems has agreed to discuss timetable with Pennyslvania regulators, in an effort to delay the onset of competition for electricity in Western Pennsylvania. The company originally sought the Public Utility Commission to change its plan for allowing consumers to select among electricity providers. The commission, however, said that a third of all customers will be allowed to select their supplier on Jan. 1, 1999; the next third on Jan. 2, 1999 and the final third on Jan. 1, 2000.
