Decision analysis at the crossroads
Article Abstract:
Expected utility (EU) theory and software based on it can be used to analyze decision making problems provided the analysis incorporates the relevant consequences of all alternatives. Some researchers now doubt the applicability of EU theory, which holds that decisions must follow three principles: ordering, independence and continuity. However, EU remains the most valuable decision making model so long as it is combined with the idea of consequentialism or the study of alternative outcomes. Decision making strategies that attempt to compute consequences are included.
