Fares are slashed to vie with the new arrivals

Southwest Airlines announced its plans to operate flights from Philadelphia International Airport starting 9 May 2004 and US Airways and other major carriers lowered their fares to match what the big discounter would charge on those routes. US Airways, which is working to lower its operating costs so that it can withstand the decline in fares, carries about 59 percent of the passengers at Philadelphia airport and has more than 5,500 employees in the region.

Information regarding complaints and possible protests by members of the tourism and hospitality industry in Philadelphia is discussed. Employee representatives held a sidewalk demonstration condeming the election of two representatives by the city council to represent the hospitality workers industry, yet have no experience in the industry.

Information regarding the increased time being advised for air travelers is discussed. Increased terror alerts have caused travel experts to advise 90 minutes extra travel time when using air services.
