For-profit hospitals losing ground
Article Abstract:
The national health care industry, which has seen a number of for-profit hospitals run into financial problems in recent years, is struggling with the debate over issues of quality-of-care versus bottom-line concerns. The agreement by Tenet Healthcare to acquire eight bankrupt Allegheny Health Systems hospitals has brought the ongoing debate into regional focus. Industry analysts, who have noted that $1 trillion was spent on health care in the US in 1997, claim that the government and insurance industry pressure to limit cost increases has hurt hospitals profit margin and slowed spending.
