General Instrument is off and running with digital TV equipment

General Instrument Corp. of Horsham, PA, has announced delivery of equipment for technical upgrades to digital broadcasting at CBS, HBO and KRON-TV of San Francisco, CA. Television broadcasters in top markets are in a rush to meet the November 1, 1998 deadline for launching digital television. General Instrument spokesperson Greg La Brache said the digital encoding and decoding devices to be supplied by the firm account for sales of $6 million. FCC's tentative timetable for converting all television broadcasting to digital calls is by 2006.
