Getting a permit just got a lot slower; system glitch weighs PennDot down
Article Abstract:
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's new computer system is causing delays in the granting of permits to companies needing to move oversized trucks and equipment on state highways. Because the system can only read highway numbers, instead of names, PennDot motor carrier division employees have had difficulty entering applications into the computer. A spokesperson from Thackray Crane Rental (Philadelphia) said her company was losing jobs because of the delays. When fully implemented, however, the new system is expected to speed the permit process by allowing companies to file permit applications electronically.

Conrail rolling on to sidetrack
Article Abstract:
Conrail Inc.'s new owners CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp., both based in Virginia, are taking over effective Aug. 22, 1998. Conrail will no longer be based in Philadelphia, PA, and Conrail Chairman and Chief Executive David M. LeVan is leaving a day before the takeover. Amid such changes, little else will change in Conrail's operations as the same dispatchers of train will be engaged in the same work under the new ownership. The new owners also offered Conrail managers the same positions as what they held at Conrail. Norfolk Southern and CSX want to ensure continuity in the operations of Conrail.
