Electricity shopping starts slowly
Article Abstract:
The implementation of Pennsylvania's new electric choice program, which permits two-thirds of the state's 5.2 million electric customers to select a new power supplier beginning January 1999, has been delayed due to the failure of the state Public Utilities Commission to finalize the rules needed for the implementation of the program. The program was originally set to start by Sep. 1, 1998, but because it has taken the state PUC longer than expected to complete the rules, it is only now that customers are to receive information on how to shop for a new power supplier. Customers of Duquesne Light Co., Allegheny Power and Pennsylvania Power Co. will be receiving a "How to Shop Guide," in addition to a list of companies approved to give electric service in their area, before the end of the month.

DQE gives NRC details on N-plant
Article Abstract:
Duquesne Light Co. officials have met with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission representatives over a status report to resolve problems and restart one of the company's two plants that were shut down in early 1998. The Beaver Valley Unit 1 nuclear plant was shut down because of an increasing disparity between the way workers were operating the plant and the governing rules on its operations. The shut down worsened the electricity shortages being experienced in Western Pennsylvania and across the Midwest in summer 1998. The facility will reopen on Aug. 12, 1998, and will resume power production about a week later. Jack Crlenjak of the NRC said the problems individually were not significant, but take together, they emphasize administrative problems at the plant.

Power shopping OK'd for consumers
Article Abstract:
Duquesne Light Co. customers could receive savings of $100 or more on their electricity bills in 1999 as the Public Utility Commission granted approval on a power shopping measure. Two-thirds of the utility's customers, or close to 400,000 homes and businesses in Pennsylvania counties, Allegheny and Beaver, will be able to avail of lower-cost electricity effective January 1999. By January 2000, the rest of the 200,00 customers will be available to choose their own power provider to succeed Duquesne Light, a utility that charges one of the highest power rates in the US.
