HealthAmerica sues AGH, 3 others
Article Abstract:
Coventry Corp., the Bethesda, MD-based parent of managed care insurer HealthAmerica of Pennsylvania, has sued Allegheny General Hospital and related Western Pennsylvania health care firms Forbes Health System, Canonsburg Hospital and Allegheny Valley Hospital. The $108-million suit asks the Allegheny County Common Pleas Court to issue an order requiring the hospitals to fulfill their contractual obligations to offer health care services to HealthAmerica's 290,000 members in Western Pennsylvania. Allegheny General's parent foundation, AHERF, is trying to protect all four of the institutions named in the suit from its massive bankruptcy case. HealthAmerica is the biggest creditor of AHERF.

AHERF eyes buyer for Forbes Metro
Article Abstract:
Dallas, TX-based LifeCare Management Services is in talks with Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation (AHERF) for the possible acquisition of the Forbes Metropolitan Hospital in Wilkinsburg, PA. Forbes Metropolitan is not one of eight hospitals in Philadelphia that are being sold by AHERF in a deal worth $345 million in line with bankruptcy reorganization but selling the hospital still requires bankruptcy court approval. Other hospitals that are not part of the bankruptcy reorganization are Allegheny Valley, Canonsburg, and Allegheny General.

AGH's parent trying to stop bleeding
Article Abstract:
Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation (AHERF), parent of Allegheny General Hospital, could consider filing Chapter 11 if talks with potential lenders prove futile, according to sources. The possibility of bankruptcy started to appear in June 1998, after AHERF failed to reach an agreement with Nashville, TN-based Vanguard Health Systems Inc. to sell six of its money-losing Philadelphia, PA, hospitals. According to AHERF President Anthony Sanzo, the systemwide losses had climbed to $27 a month.
