House approves mortgage insurance limits
Article Abstract:
The House of Representatives has approved a bill mandating creditors to cancel private mortgage insurance coverage after homeowners have earned sufficient equity in their houses to keep at its lowest the risk of default. Under the proposed law, mortgage lenders must end any insurance coverage after the borrower pays 22% of the loan value. Application for cancellation of the insurance is also allowed after the borrower pays 20% of the loan value. While eight states have already passed legislation regulating the mortgage-insurance business, the proposed law mandates that the stronger law, whether state or federal, shall apply.
