European drug firms may merge

Astra AB and the Zeneca Group acknowledged that they were engaged in "advanced discussions" over the possibility of merging together. Such a deal would create the world's fifth-largest drug manufacturer. According to Rachel Bloom, a spokeswoman for Zeneca, the merger would be between equals. Both firms have more than $80 billion in combined market value. Zeneca and Astra both have clinical trial and drug marketing operations in the Philadelphia area.

NCO, with purchase, plans to become No. 1

The Fort Washington based NCO Group Inc. will acquire Compass International Services Corp. of New York in a deal estimated at $112.4 million. NCO will issue around 3.4 million shares of common stock to acquire Compass. The acquisition will make NCO the largest debt-collecting company in the nation.
