Mutual fund firm to pay SEC fine

Massachusetts Financial Services Co. (MFS) agreed to pay $50 million to settle the charges brought against it by the Philadelphia office of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). MFS was charged with negotiating 'strategic alliances' with about 100 brokerage firms, asking them to tout MFS mutual funds over those sold by other companies, and agreeing to pay up-front and ongoing fees to the brokerages, in addition to investors' money.

Delaware's diversified income fund A was the top performing intermediate term bond in the year 2004 in rankings by the Morningstar Inc., in the Chicago fund ranking firm. The fund family, which manages $16.1 in the long-term mutual fund assets, took in $1.2 billion in the year 2004.
