Nanotechnology, the science of manipulating individual molecules, is used to improve products by way of more durable coatings, stronger plastics and more sophisticated electronics materials. The US federal government has become a big backer of nanotechnology, allocating $849 million for research in 2004.

Burnout of cigar boom ends Holt's private again

Philadelphia, Penn.-based Holt's Cigar Holdings Inc. has announced it will go private after the company's stock failed to live up to expectations. Holt, which will be acquired by a company controlled by the Fuente family and a company officer, has been hurt by lagging cigar sales.
