Nuclear plant woes costly to DQE
Article Abstract:
Duquesne Light Co.'s unit 1 nuclear reactor in Beaver Valley, along Ohio River, northwest of Pittsburgh, PA, has restarted its operations after a long shutdown. However, DQE Inc., the parent of Duquesne Light Co., reported the closure will still bring an undetermined amount of losses to the company's financial performance for the third quarter of 1998. The plant, which produces an average of 20% of the utility's power, has operated for only ten days since Sept. 28, 1997. Duquesne Light said it had spent $28.9 million more to buy power from other utilities to fill up power shortage from the time the plant was closed until June 30, 1998.
