PUC: utilities can merge before giving up lines
Article Abstract:
Allegheny Energy Inc. and Duquesne Light Co. have been allowed to complete their proposed merger even before giving up control of their transmission lines to an independent operator, according to a vote by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Authority. Earlier, the commission had ruled that the firms could not merge until after an independent system operator controlled their transmission lines in assurance that the firm would not block its competitors from using the wires. Under the ruling, Allegheny will have to divest 2,500 megawatts of its generating capacity which it would gain from Duquesne as part of the merger.

Electricity providers successful in Y2K communications test
Article Abstract:
Peco Energy and other electricity providers said recently that they experienced no serious problems in a US Y2K drill testing their ability to operate without regular data communications and phones. The electric industry transfers operating data continuously among utility control rooms, generating plants and regional systems operators such as PJM Interconnection, which is the electric grid coordinator for the mid-Atlantic region.
