Retail rush marches on

Boscov's, a department store, will open a store at Beaver Valley Mall in Monaca, PA, by end of summer 1998 but is expected to open other outlets in Westmoreland and Butler, both in Pennsylvania according to sources. Boscov's is vying to open another branch in Clearview Mall in Butler, PA, according to Butler County Center Township supervisors, while speculations say the firm is also eyeing a branch in Greengate Mall in Westmoreland County. Buscov's, which operates 28 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Delaware, is estimated to post sales ranging from $800 million to $1 billion.

Flying for solo, for now: Kaufmann's takes a leap of faith in Robinson's booming retail climate

Kaufmann's has decided to put up a department store at the Robinson Township Center in Robinson in Pittsburg, PA. Kaufmann is set to anchor the Robinson Township mall across Route 60 in Robinson. The department store's new 200,00-sq-ft building, which is scheduled to open in October 1998, has been designed with three stone exterior walls, with a fourth wall that utilizes material that can be adapted for an indoor mall concept. Other retailers that are joining the market in Robinson include Lazarus, Sears and J.C. Penney.

Kaufmann's is anticipating to open its first department store in Columbus, OH, in the year 2000. The department chain, which has already expanded into Washington, DC, with the construction of its Franklin Mall in the region, is currently planning to expand its Shenango Valley Mall store in Sharon in Pennsylvania from 76,000 sq ft to 106,000 by 1999. The 47-yr-old Kaufmann's, which is also planning to add three more new store in 1998, is set to open a store in Robinson Town Center in October 1998.
