Dick's starts one building, still looking for another

Dick's Clothing & Sporting, a sports and fitness retailer, is pursuing plans to build a new 400,000-sq-ft regional distribution center in Pittsburgh, PA, area during the groundbreaking ceremony for its new 67,000-sq-ft headquarters at the RIDC Park West in Findlay, PA. The new headquarters, which will be built at a cost of $7.4 million, is expected to be ready for occupancy by July 1999. Dick's Clothing Chairman Ed Stack said his company has visited sites in Westmoreland County, PA, and Fayette County, PA, for the new distribution center, on which the firm plans to break ground by April 1999.

Ace Athletic, which sells athletic clothing and footwear, is planning to leave Homestead in Pittsburgh, PA, when its lease expires in January 1999. The planned move by Ace Athletic will result in merely two outlets for the firm, one on the South Side's Carson St. and the other on Penn Avenue in East Liberty, both in Pittsburgh. Owner Gary Schmitt stated that he knew Ace Athletic would eventually leave Homestead after he acquired a four-story, 15,000-sq-ft building at 1214 E. Carson St., also in Pittsburgh.
