Snack break
Article Abstract:
Nabisco will retain at least two of the automated baking lines at its East Liberty, PA, plant which is slated for closure. The lines will be kept operational until Feb. 1, 1999, while two other lines that manufacture the plant's top-selling product, Ritz Bitz cracker sandwiches, will be transferred. Mayor Murphy and US Sen. Rick Santorum convinced Nabisco officials to keep the equipment to make it easier for the plant to attract new buyers. Company spokesman Henry Sandbach, however, said the plant will certainly not be sold to a competitor or a co-packer or subcontractor.

Activists plan giant Nabisco boycott
Article Abstract:
Nabisco, a giant food company, is the target of a big boycott by community activists in light of its decision to close a seven-story bakery complex located at 6425 Ave. in East Liberty in Pittsburgh, PA. The closure will leave 350 of the bakery's estimated 395 employees without jobs. East End Neighborhood Forum plans to ask large users of Nabisco products, such as restaurants, grocery chains, schools and other institutions, to join the boycott. Overcapacity and the age of the bakery, the oldest in Nabisco's system, were cited as the reasons behind the closure.
