Southwest is offering voluntary retirement

Southwest Airlines Co. is offering voluntary early retirement to most of its 31,522 employees in order to reduce costs. The program, which provides three benefit packages based on years of work to the employees who have worked with the Dallas-based company for at least a year, includes mixes of cash, health-care benefits, and travel privileges.

Delta may cut 7,000 positions

Atlanta-Delta Air Lines is eliminating up to 7,000 jobs, cutting employee wages, and shedding its Dallas hub as part of a plan to help the carrier cope with high fuel costs and competition from low-fare rivals. Instead, Delta is likely to expand its hub in Cincinnati, Atlanta and Salt Lake city with redeployed aircraft from Dallas-Fort Worth.
