State will ensure effort by Kvaerner to buy locally, Ridge says
Article Abstract:
Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard Inc. will be supervised by a consultant as it builds state-of-the-art yard via a $430-million subsidy from the state of Pennsylvania, federal and local governments. Governor Ridge said the state will hire the consultant to guarantee the firm is not ignoring any area companies that could supply it with parts or equipment. Kvaerner's advanced shipbuilding expertise is expected to bring jobs and support the rebirth of the modern shipbuilding in Philadelphia. The company has gone to Portugal for a giant gantry crane valued at $28 million that will be the most significant piece of equipment at the new yard, lifting prefabricated ship modules into a dry dock for final assembly.

Kvaerner shares have sunk in last year
Article Abstract:
The giant Norwegian shipbuilder Kvaerner ASA, which had expanded into the United States in 1997 with the help of a half billion dollar government subsidy, buoyed hopes at the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Kvaerner, which is still working on the shipyard project, has seen its profits fall due to a variety of factors, including massive debt and management problems. Industry analysts have said that the company, which already has fired top executives, is planning to sell off some of its non-core assets.
