The fight over mutual-fund fees

The Attorney General of New York, Eliot Spitzer stated that he would continue to demand cuts in mutual-fund fees because the industry persists in overcharging individual investors. The mutual-fund advisory fees totaled $50 billion in 2002, with some companies, such as Putnam Investments and Alliance Capital Management Holding L.P., charging small investors more than large institutional clients for the same services.

The closing of mutual funds is not necessarily bad news
Article Abstract:
The issue of closing several funds to new investors is discussed which has raised concern among investors. Some industry observers state that closing a fund is aimed at stopping asset bloat, which changes a fund's ability to do what it is intended for.
