They're baaack!
Article Abstract:
Lazarus on Fifth, a Pittsburgh, PA-based retailer, is preparing for the grand opening of its new $78-million store slated for Nov. 5, 1998, for its gala and Nov. 6, 1998, for its ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Lazarus will open in a 251,000-sq-ft store at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Wood Street in Pittsburgh after rescinding its decision to close its Downtown Pittsburgh location. The decision followed its acquisition by Federated Department Stores Inc. in 1994. City officials had raised $18 million in loans from the Pittsburgh Development Fund, $15 million in tax increment financing as well as $15 million for a new 490-space underground parking garage, that persuaded Lazarus to stay.

Chain brewing
Article Abstract:
John Harvard's Brew House, a Boston, MA-based chain of brewery restaurants, has unveiled plans to expand its operations in Pittsburgh, PA, by opening up a number of new outlets as early as 1999. John Harvard's, which opened its first site in Pittsburgh in August 1997, did not, however, indicate the specific locations as well as the exact number of outlets it is planning to establish in Pittsburgh. John Harvard's, which was founded by partners Greenville Byford and Gary F. Gut, does not only offer brews made on-site but also serves traditional food such as chicken pot pie and meatloaf.

N.Y. chicken chain wants 13 locations in Pittsburgh
Article Abstract:
Ranch 1, a New York-based chicken restaurant chain, plans to open 13 locations in Pittsburgh, PA, by May 1999, said Gary Occhiogrosso, vice president of franchising. The locations, preferably, will be franchised, but the company itself will open the stores if not enough franchisees are found, said Occhiogrosso. Overall, the company targets 1,032 restaurants by 2003. The company has been attracting attention because its chairman, George Nadaff, was the one who built Boston Chicken into a national chain.
