Turnaround specialist begins Ben Franklin cleanup

Ben Franklin Technology Center of Western Pennsylvania will be placed back on its feet by Mark DuMars, who is a turnaround specialist and management consultant. DuMars, who is the president of Inglewood Associates Inc. in Cargenie, PA, has been hired by the nonprofit company after it terminated President Larry McGeehan and Vice President Kathy Haluska due to allegations of mismanagement and excessive spending. DuMars' responsibility in Ben Franklin is to manage the center's day-to-day operations, boost morale, reduce expenses and reorganize management.

Ben Franklin-Enterprise merger advances
Article Abstract:
The Enterprise Group has reached an agreement in concept to merge with Ben Franklin Technology Center. The merged operations, which is still subject to approval of the state and the board of directors of both organizations, will provide high-tech start-ups in Pittsburgh, PA, with a one-stop shop for grants and technical assistance. The new organization is also expected to work closely with Southwestern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center and possibly the Pittsburgh High Technology Council to expand Ben Franklin's services beyond grants.

Tribune-Review tempts new readers with low-price offer

Scaife Media Group's the Tribune-Review is attracting new readers with a four-day, $9.99-per-year delivery package. The new "Weekend Plus" package, which started on Aug. 18, 1998, is good for a limited time. The offer applies only to the Tribune's circulation areas in Pittsburgh, PA. After that, the regular rate of $19.98 will apply. John Murray, vice president of circulation and marketing for the Newspaper Association of America, said the Tribune's deal is not uncommon in markets with competing newspapers.
