Wyeth-Ayerst cutting 2,500 jobs worldwide

St. Davids, PA-based Wyeth-Ayerst International Inc. is planning to terminate 2,500 jobs, or 6% of the workforce, globally in 1999. The firm will cut the positions through attrition, reduction of administrative positions, and restructuring of the manufacturing and distribution system, said spokesman Douglas Petkus. In December, Wyeth-Ayerst's 40,000 employees were notified about the cuts through letters. The company is intitiating a global effort to boost its efficiency and effectiveness, said Petkus.

Lucent lays off 2,200 in the U.S

Lucent has laid off 2.200 of its U.S. work force, and intends to cut its global workforce in half, from 123,000 in January to less than 62,000 in the spring. The jobs cuts will be accomplished through layoffs, buyouts, outsourcing, and spin-offs.
