Article Abstract:
The satellite-based Global Maritime Distress and Safety System is gradually replacing Morse code in the shipping industry. The use of Morse code for shipping is set to be phased out completely by Feb 1, 1999, although it will continue to be used by amateur radio operators, spies and some members of the armed forces. The Morse telegraph was adopted as the European standard in 1851, and reached its peak in the 1870s, when there were more than 650,000 miles of telegraph line and 30,000 miles of submarine cable using Morse code.

3-D mutiny
Article Abstract:
There is now fierce competition among 3-D software companies as the special effects industry continues to expand. Kinetix played a significant role in making 3-D software much more affordable with its NT-based Studio MAX, designed as mass-market alternative to the professional programs supplied by Alias and Softimage. Studio MAX is regarded as a less powerful program than Alias's Maya, but has sold three times as many copies. However, Maya is still favoured by sophisticated designers.
