Market trends, Central Asia, major fiber-optic system projects
Article Abstract:
Turkey's plans to expand its fiber-optic telecommunication systems make the country a promising market for the makers of the equipment needed for such systems. Turkish spending on fiber-optic telecommunications will hit $93 million in 1993 and is forecast to climb 55% a year until at least 1996. Privatization of Turkish PTT, the government monopoly that at present is the main importer and end-user of fiber-optics, will be completed in 1994. Turkish plans to develop telecommunications networks with the Central Asian Turkic republics provide a further opportunity.
