A gut feeling

Article Abstract:

The Nishikawa laboratory refined their embryonic stem (ES) cell differentiation protocol to address the problem of distinguishing definitive and visceral endoderm. The new studies shows that significant advances are being made in directing pluripotent cells towards specific embryonic germ layer derivatives and that the application of cell-surface markers chosen on the basis of embryological data enables the selection of the desired cell type.

CD30 is a survival factor and a biomarker for transformed human pluripotent stem cells

Article Abstract:

It is shown that CD30, a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, is expressed on transformed but not normal hES cells and that CD30 expression protects hES cells against apoptosis. The study has demonstrated that CD30 represents a prototype biomarker for monitoring and maintaining the genetic health of hES cell cultures.

Direct reprogramming of genetically unmodified fibroblasts into pluripotent stem cells

Article Abstract:

Reprogrammed pluripotent cells are isolated from genetically unmodified somatic donor cells based upon morphological criteria. Direct isolation of pluripotent cells from cultured somatic cells is of therapeutic use.
