A quantitative model of work-related fatigue: empirical evaluations

Mathematical models developed for work-related fatigue appear to apply equally well in predicting the physiological aspects of sleep deprivation. Also, forward rotation does not appear to be superior to backward rotation.

A quantitative model of work-related fatigue: background and definition

Article Abstract:

This article discusses fatigue during shift work and the occupational health and safety risks associated with worker fatigue and sleepiness. The authors maintain that shift work, especially night work, reduces the duration of sleep, increasing sleepiness and creating higher risk for work related injuries.

Adaptation of performance during a week of simulated night work

Article Abstract:

A comparative index of the performance impairment associated with the fatigue levels frequently experienced in workplaces that require night work is provided. The findings of the study reveals that in rapidly rotating systems involving two to three consecutive night shifts, the performance impairment experienced at work will continually be greater for alcohol intoxication and in contrast, for individuals working a week of night shifts, there may be a significant degree of performance adaptation such that the impairment observed during the latter half of the week is comparatively reduced.
