Reed consumer titles could fetch $1.5 billion

Reed Elsevier PLC has decided to abandon several consumer publications circulating in the US, UK and the Netherlands to concentrate on scientific, technical and business publishing. The divested entities are valued at $900 million and could easily be sold for as much as $1.5 billion. Reed Elsevier justified its management restructuring as a way of discarding advertising-dependent projects, a strategy which will ultimately help it rid itself of its debts.

SRDS upgrades ad rate CD-ROMs

Standard Rates and Data Service Inc. has upgraded its Electronic Media Kit Library CD-ROM to include audio and full-motion video capabilities. The CD-ROM product will add popular titles Readers Digest, Sports Illustrated and TV Guide to existing offerings. The company also plans to launch a World Wide Web site and provide alternative electronic formats to ad rate publications.
