Accountants as educators

Article Abstract:

Accountants wanting to become educators have three options to choose from. The first option, in-house training in a corporate environment, can be used as a stepping stone to the two other options. However, full-time in-house training positions are available only with the largest corporations, and are usually among the first positions to be eliminated during corporate downsizing. The second option, teaching in private tuition colleges, is the most lucrative as tutors' salaries begin at 30,000 pounds sterling a year. This was the option taken by Lynda Bullimore, who left Arthur Young to become an educator at financial training institution BPP. The third option, teaching in public educational institutions, offers a beginning annual salary of only 18,000 pounds sterling, but provides both academic and personal freedom. This was the option taken by tax specialist Phil Leiwy.

Going it alone

Article Abstract:

The idea of setting up an independent practice is an option that many accountants are carefully considering in the light of the recession and the possibility of redundancy. Economic uncertainty has a way of fueling professional ambitions of independence. Jeremy Scholl and Chris Goodban are two accountants who have set up their own practices as sole practitioner and independent consultant respectively. Accountants with a track record in practice are the people in the best position to set up as sole practitioners. Scholl's practice took 8 years of careful planning. Accountants with industry experience are the people favored to set up as independent consultants, with senior level achievements over a substantial period of time as a usual requirement. In either practice, marketing efforts to acquire and maintain clients is critical to success.
