Brokers cut the costs of unit trusts
Article Abstract:
UK stock brokers, Fidelity Brokerage and City Deal, are rebating commission charges for unit trsut sales, though they are charging a dealing commission. Discount brokers may offer lower changes since they do not have dealing commissions and rebate some of sales commissions. Annual fees are also important in assessing overall charges. These fees have tended to move upwards in the UK. Value is also more important than charges, since cheap funds that do not perform well are not good value.

Investment trusts: investment trusts are better than unit trusts - that's the conventional wisdom. Better performance and lower charges are two features normaly referred to but is this always the case?
Article Abstract:
Investors can usually make more money from investment trusts than unit trusts, however unless discounts widen, signficant gains from narrowing discounts are unlikely. Some investors have been recommended to move into equivalent unit trusts as some specialist trusts are still considered vulnerable. Charges on investment trusts have traditionally been lower than unit trusts, but investment trust charges have been increasing, especially on new issues

Risky business choosing unit trusts: under proposed new rules, unit trust companies could be required to tell investors how risky their funds are. But competing commercial risk ratings' systems threaten to confuse or even mislead
Article Abstract:
Autif, the unit trust trade body, may introduce new rules requring every unit trust to disclose how risky the fund is, as early as 1996. The new rules, which would produce an industry standard, aim to prevent possible investor confusion which may result from the introduction of competing commercial risk ratings systems. Investor will have to be informed the degree of price fluctuation of a fund and volatility figures.
